: Cologne Digital Sanskrit Dictionaries: Indian Epigraphical GlossaryJemaka.鈥�(IE 8-5; EI 25, 28), melas or food which the villagers were obliged to provide to the royal officers on tour; the obligation of the villagers to provide food to such officers; wrongly explained by some as 鈥榓 tax for the boarding of touring royal officers鈥� (CII 4). Cf. Mar膩峁環墨 jev膩, 鈥榓 feed, a meal; sub- sistence which the villagers were bound to provide for the subordinate servants or Peons when sent to receive the collec- tions鈥� (Wilson's Glossary, s. v.). Note: jemaka is defined in the 鈥淚ndian epigraphical glossary鈥� as it can be found on ancient inscriptions commonly written in Sanskrit, Prakrit or Dravidian languages.
