PratÄ«ci had three sons: DevÄpi, Åšantanu and BÄlhÄ«ka. Åšantanu was also called MahÄbhiá¹£ak. And, he had two wives, Gaá¹…gÄ and SatyavatÄ«. From Gaá¹…gÄ was born Bhīṣma; of SatyavatÄ«, before her marriage, was born VyÄsa by ParÄÅ›ara. SatyavatÄ« had two sons, CitrÄá¹…gada and VicitravÄ«rya by Åšantanu. From VyÄsa were born Dhá¹›tarÄá¹£á¹ra, PÄṇá¸u, and Vidura, and from Dhá¹›tarÄá¹£á¹ra the Kauravas. Kunti and MÄdrÄ«, wives of PÄṇá¸u, together got from the devas five sons, viz.
