Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira骋补耻岣峚办补 (啶椸啶∴) [or Bhadra驳补耻岣峚ka?] refers to a country belonging to 鈥淧奴rv膩 or P奴rvade艣a (eastern division)鈥� classified under the constellations of 膧rdr膩, Punarvasu and Pu峁a, according to the system of 碍奴谤尘补惫颈产丑腻驳补, according to the B峁沨atsa峁僪it膩 (chapter 14), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Var膩hamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyoti峁).鈥擜ccordingly, 鈥淭he countries of the Earth beginning from the centre of Bh膩ratavar峁 and going round the east, south-east, south, etc., are divided into 9 divisions corresponding to the 27 lunar asterisms at the rate of 3 for each division and beginning from K峁泃tik膩. The constellations of 膧rdr膩, Punarvasu and Pu峁a represent the eastern division consisting of [i.e., 骋补耻岣峚办补] [...]鈥�.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
