: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasiṃha and the Early Transmission of TÄjika Astrology¶Ù³Ü°ù²¹á¸¥p³ó²¹ (दà¥à¤°à¤ƒà¤) refers to one of the “sixteen configurationsâ€ (á¹£oá¸aÅ›²¹²â´Ç²µ²¹), as discussed in the third chapter of the °²¹°ù³¾²¹±è°ù²¹°ìÄåÅ›²¹â€”one of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (TÄjika) astrology authored by Samarasiṃha in the 13th century.—Chapter 3 (á¹£oá¸aÅ›²¹²â´Ç²µ²¹-adhikÄra) is the earliest extant description in Sanskrit of this important TÄjika doctrine, derived from Sahl. The most important point to note here is that the list of configurations in the °²¹°ù³¾²¹±è°ù²¹°ìÄåÅ›²¹, like later TÄjika sources, includes the spurious ³Ù²¹³¾²úÄ«°ù²¹-²â´Ç²µ²¹ (from Arabic á¹a²úīʿ²¹) in the fourteenth place and ends with »å³Ü°ù²¹á¸¥p³ó²¹ (Ar. á¸uÊ¿f ‘weaknessâ€).

Jyotisha (जà¥à¤¯à¥‹à¤¤à¤¿à¤, Âá²â´Ç³Ù¾±á¹£a or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomyâ€ or “Vedic astrologyâ€ and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
