by Sadhvi Madhystha Prabha | 2021 | 103,765 words

This page relates ‘Other Types of Labdhi (attainments) of the study on the concept of Mysticism in Jainism exploring key concepts such as Jaina metaphysics and Jain ethics. The present research is divided into six chapters, beginning with an introduction to mysticism, examining its characteristics from both Western and Eastern perspectives. Subsequent chapters delve into the mystical aspects of Brahmanic and Shramanic literature, analyzing texts from the Shvetambara and Digambara traditions to unearth traces of Jain mysticism.

5.4. Other Types of Labdhi (attainments)

The labdhis can also be categorised into two kinds:

  1. Relative labdhis;
  2. Absolute labdhis.

1. Relative Labdhis

The labdhi that have any of the following features is relative labdhi. The features are–by product of the spiritual practice, temporary in nature, associated with matter and soul, incomplete and dependent, attained by destruction-cum-subsidence of the karma, not the end of the spiritual goal.

The labdhis that are associated with body and mind i.e. physical and mental labdhis are all purely relative labdhis. As all of them are the byproduct of spiritual practices, attained due to the destruction-cum-subsidence of the relative karmas, they are not the end of the spiritual goal and are temporary, incomplete and dependent. For example—saṃbhiṇnaśrota Labdhi, īᲹ buddhi, padānusāri Labdhi etc.

The labdhis that are purely associated with soul such as ñԲ, manaḥaparyavajñāna are also relative as they are temporary, incomplete, attained by ṣaDZ貹ś, they lose their existence in the attainment of highest Labdhi omniscience. These relative labdhis are relative mystical experiences.

2. Absolute Labdhis

Absolute labdhis are those labdhis which are attained at the end of the spiritual practice, which are purely associated with soul, not with matter or body, which are permanent, complete and independent (of Karmas) and attained by destruction of karmas.

𱹲ñԲ (omniscience), ṣa⾱첹 ṃyٱ, ṣa⾱첹 ٰ. Kṣayika-Բ--bhoga-upabhoga-īⲹ, the 𱹲岹śԲ (omni-perception) Siddhatva (liberation or state of Godhood) can be accounted as absolute labdhis.
