This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

Dhanapāla has proved an adept at using his poetic
fancy (utprekṣ�) to the aesthetic benefit and in total sym-
pathy with the prevalent poetic relish or sentiment at iha
a given point in the narration. It can easily be noticed
that he has exhibited his skill and propriety in harnessing
all types of poetic conceits, viz., Svarupotprekṣ�, Hetut-
prekṣ� and Phalotprekṣ�. And his Utpreksās are at times in-
terwoven with many other figures of speech such as Anuprāsa,
Yamaka, Upamā, Rūpaka, Samāsokti and others.
The following specimens of poetic fancies (utprekṣās)
would amply testify to the poetic genius of Dhanapāla as
they are marked by contexual harmony and sympathetic depict-
ion. Thus, the lustre, the impending fall from the heaven
and the consequent dejection are suggestively foreboded in
the course of the long description of the Vaimanika god Jva-
lanaprabha by means of apt poetic conceits, as in
द्वारदेश� झगित� दत्तदर्शनम
ब्रह्मस्तम्बमस्त शिखर पर्यस्तसूर्यमि� दिवस�
भूतसंहिकेयमि� पार्व्वणचन्द्रिकापटल�
समुपजातद्वादशारुणोदयमि�
इन्दुमण्डलाभिमुखी -
त्रिशलबनिय� वियोगा-
श्रुभिरि� सकज्जलेः कल्माणितेन कल्पतरुपल्लवचारुणा चरणयेन
बोतमान� --- प्रियापयोध� परिरम्भशंसिभिः पृथुलपरिमण्डलेर्दिव्�-
चन्दनरसस्तबकैः स्वर्गच्यवनसुलभो हृदयदक्युरितरसुरभिर्वनमप� मा पीडय�-
