This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

'Sudarsana', 'Vaikuntha' and 'Sankha' are all double-meaning.
Similarly, the port draws upon the Rāmāyaṇa story when he
compares the ocean to the life-story of Laksmana, as in
सौमित्रिचरितमिवं विस्तारितोम्मिला स्यशोभ�
( [saumitricaritamiva� vistāritommilā syaśobhama
(] 204,18ff.),.
where the latter compound has to be broken up as 'Vistrita-
-urmmi-lāsya-sobham' with 'Ambhonidhi', and as 'Vistārita-
-urmmilā-āsya-sobham' with "Saumitri-caritam'

. When the good
omens are compared to the Saivas, the simile is based on re-
ligion, as in प्रतिपन्नदणिवा ममागमः पर� शिवं शंसदभिरभ�-
प्रेतसाधकः शैवैरि� प्रधानशकुन� पद� पद� दचनिर्वृति�

Similarly the instruction in Jainism is compared to the nym-
स्वभावमधुराभिर्यथा� वर प्रथितशुश्रूषारस� वेशाभि� प्रकाशित -
[svabhāvamadhurābhiryathā� vara prathitaśuśrūṣārasā veśābhi� prakāśita -
] with
phs, as in
प्रगुण संसा� निर्वाणसरणिभिरर्थसाराभिरप्सरोभिरिव जिनमतानुसारिणीभि-
वाग्भिरावे� जीवादितत्त्वप्रभेदम्,

While praising the valour of King Meghavāhana, the poet com-

pares the total destruction of the king's enemies to the
negation of all external things of the world with reference
to the philosophical tenets of Buddhist Logic, as in

बौध्�
