This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

[durvinīte, kvāgatā tvamiha | ki� tavāgamanakāryamatropajātama, | kasta-
vāsminnāste | kaina te durmatiriya� dattā | hrītāpi na tapasvilokasya |
] 1 (2) Pāñcālī : The Pāñcālī Rāti may contain compounds
of not more than five or six words. The Guṇas Madhurya (sweet-
ness) and Saukumārya (softness ) should predominate therein,
but in any case Ojas (emphatic assertion) and Kanti (dignity
or conspicuous presence of Rasas) must not be present
in it. This manner is very common with Dhanapala and is nor-
mally utilized in the course of delineation of sentiments
like Srigara, Vīra, Karuṇa and Adbhuta, as in the following
instances :
(i) In Sṛngāra, e.g.,
506 तरिहदा हविच्छेद रामे� पत्रषण्डाडम्बरेण विहितपत्रपाणी�
वर्षासलिलपूरितास� विलाससरसीषु निममज्जु� म्भोजिनीवनान� � घनधारा-
