This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

Shri Kanaiyalal B. Dave has noticed that the
image-worship among the Jains seem to have been in vogue
in India since about the fourth century B.C. There is a
certain similarity in the Brāhmaṇico-Purāṇic tradition of
twenty-four incarnations, the Buddhist tradition of twen-
ty-four Buddhas and the Jain tradition of twenty-four
Tirthankaras. The last one was the founder of popular Jain-
ism after having attained Nirvāṇa as a result of most ri-
gorous penance, unrivalled non-violence, and uncommon re-
nunciation. Not only did the Tirthankaras themselves attain
Final Emancipation, but they have also laid down for the
masses a path to that end. As a mark of recognition and
