This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

of Malwa mainly consisted of the Br膩hma峁嘺s, K峁triyas,
Kayasthas, Vaisyas, s奴dras and Tailikas.
clearly refers to the four Var峁嘺s and Asramas. There is
no specific reference to the superiority of the Brahmins,
irrespective of their learning or the lack of it. But
they certainly enjoyed a high position from which they
expected respect from the royalty and conferred their
blessing when they duly got it. They lived in a well-
29 defined colony of their own. The term 'Dvij膩ti' signi-
fied the first three classes, viz., Brahmins, Ksatriyas
and Vai艣yas. Many Brahmins lived on alms and this seems
to have contributed to lowering their respectable position
in the society, especially the Jains, though the Saivite
royalty seem to have respected the 'Vipra' class to which
