This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (鈥減rose-romance鈥�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

137 One of the pastimes of kings, princes and warrior
class was riding. After granting the boon, the goddess
艢r墨 sets King Meghav膩hana free from the restraints of the
penance-vows and asks him to enjoy, at his heart's content,
139 riding a horse, chariot, elephant, etc., which were the
common animals or vehicals for transport. During the festi-
vals people used to ride mock horses, elephants, etc.,
fastened to horizontal merry-go-rounds.
140 With it was connected the pastime of hunting. Dhanap膩la,
being a devout Jain, was not much in favour of hunting,
though he himself seems to have accompanied King Bhoja
on such expeditions quite a few times prior to his conver-
