This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

KUNDINAPURA was a city in the Vidarbha region. It
was situated to the south of Varora in the modern Cāndā
District, and about sixty-five kilometres to the east of

MANIPURA was the capital city of Citravāhana, where

in the Kalinga region, and is identified by Oppert with
Manalūru near Madura; according to Rhice it is the same

Dhanapāla, it was a city rather a port on the Suvarṇa-
dvipa.

KAÑCĪ is known at present by the name Conjeevaram
near Madras in South India. During the tenth century it
was an important centre of great power under the early
Cola rulers. It is also listed among the 'mokṣa-dāyikā'
cities.
RANGASĀLĀ was the capital city of Candraketu, the

LANKA is also referred to as the city of that name
