The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

strength of the compositions known to him by these nome-
15 nclatures. His definitions of an 'Akhyāyikā'and a 'Kathā'
respectively do not differ substantially from those givan
by the Agnipurāna, except in the following three addi-
tional important characteristics, viz.;
(i) In a 'Kathā' the story is told by somebody other
than the hero, while in an 'Akhyāyikä' it is narrated by
the hero himself;
(ii) A 'Kathā'may not be marked by certain catchwords
which are ingeniously put by the poet in an 'Akhyāyikā'.
(iii) A 'Kathā' may be in Sanskrit or in Apabhraṃśa
while an 'Akhyāyikā' may not be so.
16 Dandin, in his Kāvyādarsa, does not approve
of these points and criticizes them as being insufficient
to warrant a distinction between the sub-types. He also
notices that a 'Kathā' is found to be composed in Sanskrit
as well as in other languages such as the Prakrits.
