Essay name: Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala (study)

This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

him with VÄkpatirÄja I, alias Bappayyaraja, the son of
Siyaka I, both of whom were the feudatories and generals
of the Gurjara PratihÄra emperors, one of whom must this

DhanapÄla has remembered him as the best of the Sveta-
mbaras 51 prabhÄcandra gives the exact date of birth of
BhadrakÄ«rti, alias SÅ«rapÄla alias BappabhattisÅ«ri, as
Sunday the third day of the bright half of the month of
52 BhÄdrapada in the year V.Sam.800 (i.e.744 A.D.). His
father's name was 'Bappa' and mother's'Bhaá¹á¹i', while
his own name was at first SurapÄla. His birth-place has
been mentioned as "DuvÄtithi" which is identified, by
Muni KalyÄṇavijaya, with DuvÄ near DhÄnera in the present
