ture ceremony (Pavitr膩ropana) of Mah膩k膩la (probably at
Ujjayin墨), when the king remarked about the lack of an
investiture ceremony on the part of the Jain deities,
who must,therefore, be without the sacred thread (also
'a-pavitra' i.e. impure). Dhanap膩la retorted that it was
only the impure ones who need a purifier (pavitraka).
Since the Jain Tirthamkaras are ever pure, they do not

poet a sculpture and asked the reason why the Love-god
