This is an English study of the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, a Sanskrit poem written in the 11th century. Technically, the Tilaka-manjari is classified as a Gadyakavya (“prose-romance�). The author, Dhanapala was a court poet to the Paramara king Munja, who ruled the Kingdom of Malwa in ancient west-central India.

difference of opinion with his father as a result of
which he separated from him, left Ujjayini and began to

Sarvadeva had heard about the prophetic powers of the monk.
Hence, inspite of the fact that he was himself a Brahmin,
he went to see the monk in the Jain monastery, where he
passed three days and nights in mystic trance. The monk
enquired of him as to whether he had come there to test
him or for some other purpose. Sarvadeva confided to him
that he was searching for some hidden treasure which must
have been buried somewhere in the house as his father was
getting substantial munificence from his royal patrons.He
requested the monk to help him get at that. The monk,
