viii Sta** STATEMENTS **a*s I. The present thesis is the first attempt at an allround study of the TILAKAMANJARI,a Sanskrit prose-romance of Kavi Dhanapala of Dhara. It, thus, serves to bring to the (limelight a long-forgotten but highly valuable, and hence noteworthy Sanskrit literary master-piece, negleced by veteran scholars of the past, but which deserves to an honoured place, of which it has been unjustly deprived so far, in the history of Sanskrit literature. 2. As a study of social and cultural atmosphere reflected in the Tilakamanjari of Dhanapala, it serves as a valuable fresh source- -material for re-writing the detailed cultural history of India, � 3. The present work is based mostly on the discovery of new facts and partly on the discovery of new relations of old facts,' observed in passing by many a veteran scholar � so far. I have fully drawn upon allt the available sources in original and all of them have been duly acknowledged in their proper places.
