Structural Temples of the Caulukyan Period 189 Laxmitilaka UpadhyÄya, 258 the temple dedicated to Mahavira
at Bhimapalli (Bhiladia) was constructed in V. S. 1317 (A. D.
1261). Abhayatilaka Gaṇi 259 describes this temple as Mandalika
VihÄra, and says that it was restored by one Bhuvanpala Åšrestḥi.
Before restoration, the temple existed in V. S. 1218 (A. D. 1162)
as it is referred to by RayaṇaÅ›Ä. 260 None of the temples exists
in its original form.
The Ä€dinÄtha temple at Athapoknara* is a Siva shrine. The
present structure is new but a good deal of the material of
which it is made is evidently old. An inscription of Viśaladeva
is placed in a small modern shrine opposite to it. 261
Raṇaka Samantasinha in the time of Visaladeva in V. S. 1319
(A. D. 1262) gave some grants for the maintenance of the
temples of BallÄla-NÄrÄyaṇa and RÅ«pa-NÄrÄyaṇa 262 in Vardh
pathaka. These temples cannot be traced; now. These temples,
unless they be of Visṇu under his local names, seem to be of
Surya, or of a composite aspect of Surya and Viṣṇu. Even now
there are some temples in Gujarat which are called by the
name of Sūṛya-nÄrÄyaṇa, the cult image being a combination
of Sürya and Visnu. 263
From the Kantela (Dist Junagadh.) inscription of Arjundeva's
reign we learn that one Sämantasinha erected an image of
Visnu called Salaká¹£a-NÄrÄyaṇa (in V. S. 1320) in the temple
of Laksmi-nÄrÄyaṇa to increase the merit of his dead brother
