Literary sources furnished the political set up of Magadha from the proto-historic period to the dawn of the early historic phase. In this journey from a mythical to historical phase ΈιΔεΒα²Ή²΅αΉh²Ή held the exclusive position of being the capital of Magadha. Literary sources reflect a clear two stage development of in ΈιΔεΒα²Ή²΅αΉh²Ή. For the proto historic period different ±Κ³ά°ωΔεαΉa²υ and the ²Ρ²Ή³σΔε²ϊ³σΔε°ω²Ή³Ω²Ή portrayed ΈιΔεΒα²Ή²΅αΉh²Ή as under a chieftainship. For the historic period we have much more diverse type of sources that demonstrated ΈιΔεΒα²Ή²΅αΉh²Ή as enjoying the rank of a supreme urban centre and royal seat of an ambitious and expansive state. To catch this process our thrust is on literary records of this period, that the archaeological sources cannot properly demonstrate. We have started the survey of the political culture with the JarΔndha legend.
