Wind instruments (Sushira)

(i) Conch (Sankha)

Of the wind instruments displayed, the most popular is the conch. Sculptural depictions of a gana holding a conch in both their hands and producing sound by blowing into it can be seen in seen in several structural temples of this period at Mamallapuram (fig. 398) and Kanchipuram. Blowing of conch is considered auspicious to this day and is done before starting an important religious event.

(ii) Flute (Venu)

Flute as a musical instrument is the most simplest in make and can be regarded as a common man’s musical instrument. One of its fine depiction in the art of this period can be seen in the Govardhanadhari panel at Mamallapuram, where a man playing the flute can be seen. Similar depiction can also be seen in association with the ganas in the Kailasanatha (fig. 399) and Muktesvara temples at Kanchipuram. The flute also seems to be the most common instrument accompanying the mrdanga. Best examples of the same can be seen in two panels on the southern cloister wall (lower row) (fig. 392 and 396) in the Vaikunthaperumal temple at Kanchipuram. Both the panels depict performance of dance and music in the royal court.

(iii) Trumpet (Turiya)

A rare depiction of a trumpet can be seen in a panel on the northern cloister wall (upper row) of the Vaikunthaperumal temple at Kanchipuram. It portrays a picture of a hunt involving a man blowing a trumpet and chasing two deers (fig. 400).
