Rg Veda refer to instruments like Nali (10.135.7), Vana ( 9.97.8),
Āghāti (10.146.2), Dundubhi (1.28.5), Bākura (1.117.21), Vamsa (1.10.1),
Karkari (2.43.3), etc whose references are given in Chapter III.
RṚg Veda mentions Vīṇ� to be played while chanting the Sāmans.
In Rg Veda, Vāna is quoted often. Sāyana explains it as " वाणं शत - सङ्खाभ�
स्तन्त्रीभिर्युक्तं वीणा विशेषं धमन्ते वादयन्ते [vāṇa� śata - saṅkhābhi
stantrībhiryukta� vīṇ� viśeṣa� dhamante vādayante
]
" meaning that the Vāna was an
instrument with hundred strings.
तदित्सधस्थमभ� चारु दीधय गावो यच्छासन्वहतु� � धेनव� �
माता यन्मन्तुयूथस्य पूव्याभि वाणस्य सप्तधातुरिज्जन� �
[taditsadhasthamabhi cāru dīdhaya gāvo yacchāsanvahatu� na dhenava� |
mātā yanmantuyūthasya pūvyābhi vāṇasya saptadhāturijjana� ||

Rg Veda - 10.32.4
Shine, Indra, upon this elegant chaser of sacrifice when our praises
desire your approach; since the praise of the worshiper precedes the
adoration, this person accompanied by the seven officiated priests is
offering the prayers. Sayana explains �वाणस्य वाद्यस्य सप्त धातु� निषादादि सप्त
स्वरोपेत� जन� अभ� गच्छेत� तद्वत् तद्गुणोपेतम् [vāṇasya vādyasya sapta dhātu� niṣādādi sapta
svaropeto jana� abhi gaccheti tadvat tadguṇopetam
]

[sapta dhātu�

signifies the seven tones that were produced in the hundred strings of
the Vinā Vāna.
