xi Appendix-3 Text of Interview with Mr. S. Janardhanan, Music and Dance teacher on Ques: You are a professional dancer and musician. You run one Institution. At Thrissur, called 'Subramanya Kalakshetram'; please tell about its origins. Ans: I started this institution known as 'Subramanya Kalakshetram' about thirty years back in the memory of my father Subramanyan. Because I received the first lesson of music from my father. Unfortunately he passed away in my childhood. Then I learned music from my elder brother Sankaranarayanan. Later I studied music from Prof. S. Syamanadhan, Adayar, Madras University. Ques; Will you please explain your experience in the field of classical dance? Ans: Now I conduct dance classes in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchippudi. I first practiced Bharatanatyam from Kalamandalam Yosodamma at the age of nine and studied from Kalamandalam Indira Rajan. Then Mohiniyattam from Kalamandalam Vimala and Kuchippudi from Swapnasundari. I took my M.A degree in Music with Specialization in Choreography from the University of Madras. Ques: Did you learn Sanskrit traditionally? Ans: I learned Sanskrit traditionally in my house and later studied privately at Sree Ramakrishna Mission, Thrissur and passed sastri

xii exam. Then I joined in school as a Sanskrit teacher. But I resigned my job and concentrated in dance and music. For some time during the period of 2004-06. Then I taught Sanskrit language and grammar to school going students. Ques: Will you explain nature of study in your institution? Ans: In my institution 'Subramanya Kalakshetram' presently about 25 students are studying various dance forms. Three types of students are attending classes. Majority of the students are regular students who want to acquire high standards in dance forms. After three years of study they are given chance for their first stage (arangettam). They continue this education in a selected dance form for five or six years. Some of the students attend the classes. for getting training for performing in the school youth festival Students having some knowledge in dance also come for higher or special studies. Ques: Sanskrit language is closely related to classical dance and music. Do you teach Sanskrit to your music and dance students? Ans: I explain Sanskrit terms and their meanings which are seen in the books on music and dance to students wherever necessary. I am continuing my studies in dance and Sanskrit. I take lessons of Kathakali from Kalamandalam Krishnakumar and Venkittaramanan privately. I enhance my knowledge in Sanskrit by self study, I have a good library in my house.

xiii In my opinion Sanskrit knowledge helps the students for the understanding of the meaning of padas and mudras and also helps to distinguish the correct bhavas. This is also relevant in the studies of classical music pronunciation becomes clear and correct. My own teaching experience of Sanskrit is that the mode of reception of Sanskrit by the students differs from person to person. I advise my students. that a person who wants to enrich his knowledge in Sanskrit has got several informal sources today. They can join correspondence courses, approach Sanskrit scholars and conduct self study using books and guides like Sanskritdipika from Sree Ramakrishna Matham, Pala and Sanskrit readers from R.S. Vadyar and Sons. Kalpathy, Palakkad etc. Ques: Film actress also come and practice various dance forms in your institution. In this context do you have any novel ideas in this field for your students? Ans: I have written one book on dance namely Natyathinte Adavu sambradayam, and I am engaged in the work of a second work. In addition to these I released a number of CD's related to various dance forms like Keralanatanam, Dakshayagam, Ganapathivijayam, Surpanakhankham etc. I did Bharatanatyam event in Sree Krishna Karnamrtam and did some Mohiniyattam events in Brhamacaripravesam of Kumarasambhava & Narasimhavataram.
