Part 2 - Sacred Performances and the Devalaya
Billeswar Devalaya is considered to be a complex as it is full of different structures for different purposes. The Devalaya campus encompasses-Shiva Mandir, Ganesh Mandir, Bishnu Mandir, Kali Mandir etc., where deities are worshiped individually. The devotees get the privilege to worship the deities within the same campus. The practices done inside the Devalaya campus are out of general criticism. In fact each and everything related to the Devalaya are considered as sacred things as they have mythical legendary links. So, they are not scrutinized or assessed on the basis of the general social logic. The people believe the entire campus as a sacred one and consider all the performances as sacred. The sacredness is attained by the Devalaya campus for services to humanity in alleviating the plight of life. The devotees and interns of the Devalaya firmly believe that the chief deity of the Devalaya Lord Shiva as a Shanta Baba, who is always benevolent. Among all the beliefs and faiths related with the Devalaya the most remarkable one is that the Devalaya campus never remains deserted. Without any prior information, a large number of devotees come to visit the Devalaya as a sacred and ancient shrine of Assam. The requisite components for considering a religious place to be sacred complex are abundant with the Devalaya. The elaboration of this point occupies due place in the thesis.
During Vishnu Puja in all the adjoining areas of Billeswar Devalaya-the Mantra: Om Bilweswaraiye Namah is chanted by the priest to initate the puja. It signifies reverence to the chief deity of Billeswar Devalaya, whose image is rooted in the minds of the general preists even if they are not directly related to the Devalaya. It is to be noted as one of the sacred performances which contribute to form the Billeswar Devalaya as a sacred copmplex.
