Storm

Gopal Bhaumik

(Translated by the author from his original Bengali Poem)

We have been sacrificed on the unhallowed altar of life:

Lost in a mist of doubt, we have entered an unknown region;

We are human beings, but shorn of our pristine beliefs.

We are the children of the Immortal Deity.

The rough perspective of our life is shameful of its own poverty.

In the loveless and dreamless desert of life

We vainly seek a green oasis.

But the future is not for us.

Not for us is the luxurious wine of women’s lips;

Our disfigured life is always troubled,

Troubled by the stifling sand-storm of doubt and unbelief;

We are lost travellers seeking vainly for the way

We are the children of the Immortal Deity.
