INTRODUCTION ; are to be called the Purvamimamsa and the remaining 4 chapters, the Uttaramamamsa; further the Purvamanamsa, consisting of the first 16 chapters was written by Jaimini and the Uttaramimamsa, by Vyasa. Vide the Bodhayana. vrtti quoted therein : " vrttatkarmadhigamadanantaram brahmavividisa | samhitametaccharirakam jaiminiyena sodasalaksaneneti sastraikatvasiddhih | " Some of the followers of Sri Ramanunja indicate the subjects dealt with in the three kandas forming the two Mimamsas, and their authorship in the following couplet:- karmadevata brahmagocara sa tridhobhau sutrakaratah | 66 jaiminermuneh kasakrtsnato badarayanadityatah kramat || 57 According to this couplet the author of the Devatakanda is Kasakrtsna and not Jaimini, as is made out from the words ' jaiminiyena sodasalaksanena " quoted by Sri Ramanuja from the Bodhayanavrtti (vide supra ). But this question of discrepancy between two traditions in the same school is ably answered by Vedantadesika in his Adhikaranasaravali thus 46 vrttigranthe tu jaiminyuparacitatatha sodasadhyayyupatta samkarsah kasakrtsnaprabhava iti katham taccaratnakaroktih | atra brumah saduktau na vayamiha mudha badhitum kimcidarha nirvahastupacaratkacidiha ghatate hyekatatparyayogah || The commentator Sesagovinda raises the question of this discrepancy in the traditions relating to the authorship of the Devatakanda and answers it by remarking that the Kanda, consisting of the four Adhyayas, of which Jaimini is said to be the author, must be a separate work altogether and that Mimamsa, as a whole should be taken to consist of 24 adhyayas. This suggestion seems to be not acceptable, because, if it were so, the Sarvadarsanasangraha would certainly have mentioned that Kanda also. "
