The term known as Anitya-Drava (non eternal substance
referred to in kathoparisad 2:20). It does not carry the
same meaning of the term Anu as Vaisesika envisages it
(Kathopanishad 2:20). Atman is associated with the subject
of five sensory organs. The abovementioned five subjects
neverthless are attributed to these panca-mahabhutas. The
Atman is superior to Mahat (Kathoparisad 3:15). Similar
views also indicated in Charak Samita with, with regard to
the Param-Atma (CS.Su.1:56). In evolution of universe is
enumerated from the 'Rayi' or 'Prana' in Prasnoparisad.
Actually the Rayi is the evolute of Prakriti and Prana is
the base of life (Prasnoparisad 1:5). The abovementioned
upanisad discussed the several terms like Akash, Vayu, Agni,
Ap., Prithi alongwith Vak, Manas, Cakshus and Sotra. In this
context the Akash etc. are also said to be the Devas. Most
probably this is the oldest reference regarding the Panca
mahabhuta where all the components are discribed simulane-
ously (Prashopanisad 2:2). The Taittariya upanisad discussed
the Panca-mahabutas at great length in successive form with
its application (Tatt.up.1:1:3). This upanisads explicitly
exhibits the manifestations of the Panca-mahabhuta from each
to another. It pronounces that first of all the Akash is
evolved. From Akash to Vayu, Vayu to Agni, Agni to Jala and
from Jala to Prithvi. Prithivi is the abode of Ausadhi. From
Ausadhi the annas came into vogue and from Anna to ratas and
ultimately thence Purush is evolved (Taitt.up.2:1).
