when the Jivatma ceases to be such and is the Paramatma or
bodiless spirit (Videha-mukti). The Jiva exist in this
body during dreamless sleep (Susupti).
The second and third bodies are differentiations
through evolution of the causal body, from which first
proceeds the subtle body, and from the latter is produced
the gross body.
The subtle body is also called Linga Sarira or
Puryastaka, is constituted of the first evolutes (Vikritti)
from the causal Prakriti body namely, the mind (Antah-
karama), the internal instrument, together with the external
instruments (Bahya-karana), or the senses (Indriya), or
the senses (Indriya) and their susceptible objects (Tarmatra).
The third or Gross Body is the body of "matter"
which is the gross particular object of the senses derived
from the supersensibilities.
Shortly, the subtle body may be described as the
Mental Body, as that which succeeds is called the gross
body of matter.
Sir John Woodroffe mentioned in his book Introduction
to Tantra Sastra (p. 43-48) that, (STS-woodroffe, 1969, p.
43-48) in the body there are five Kosas (Sheaths) (1)
Annamaya, (2) Pranamaya, (3) Manomaya, (4) Vijnanamaya
and (5) Anandamaya or the body of Bliss. According to
"Theosophic" teaching, the first two sheaths are apparently
