9. Panchabhautika theory of Matter
We shall now expound this Panchabhautika theory as detailed in Ayurveda. Matter as we meet with it, is a mixture of the Bhutas, containing one or the other in predominent
244 degree. As Susruta says, all substances are derived from a combination of the five Bhutas and the predominance of any one of them in a particular substance determines its character; and so we say, this is Earthy (meaning thereby that it contains the earth Bhuta in a predominant degree), this is watery, this is Fiery, this is Airy and this is Ethereal (SS.Su.41.3, Cf.cs.1.26). According to the elder Vagbhata, every form of matter is penta-bhautika. Of the Bhutas, Prithivi is the repository. Ap the source Akasa, Vayu and Tejas are the accompanying causes by the combination of which the resulting body is produced (AS.Su.17).
