Essay name: Studies in the Upapuranas
Author: R. C. Hazra
This book studies the Upapuranas: a vast category of (often Sanskrit) literature representing significant historical, religious, and cultural insights of the ancient Indian civilization. These texts provide rich information, especially on Hinduism covering theology, mythology, rituals, and dynastic genealogies.

STUDIES IN THE UPAPURĀṆAS
an UpapurÄṇa named 'BrahmÄṇá¸a', is shown by its mention.
in the majority of the lists of eighteen UpapurÄṇas. It is
only in the Devi-bhÄgavata, Bá¹›haddharma-p. and EkÄmra-p.
as well as in the list of UpapurÄṇas given in the Smá¹›ti-tattva
and the Sabda-kalpadruma from a text of the Kūrma-p.
that the BrahmÄṇá¸a is not included among the UpapurÄṇas.
After giving two lists of UpapurÄṇas (one from the ‘Kaurma
MahÄpurÄṇa' and the other from the 'Brahma-vaivarta'),
in both of which there is mention of a BrahmÄṇá¸a Upa-
purÄṇa, Mitra-miÅ›ra says that the NÄradiya and BrahmÄṇá¸a
UpapurÄṇas were different from the MahÄpurÄṇas of the
same titles.58
Though, by reason of its mention in most of the com-
paratively early lists of UpapurÄṇas, the BrahmÄṇá¸a-upapu-
rÄṇa seems to have been written at an early date, it is not
drawn upon by any of the Nibandha-writers. Even Mitra-
miÅ›ra, who distinguishes between the two PurÄṇic works
named 'BrahmÄṇá¸a', does not appear to have seen the
'BrahmÄṇá¸a-upapurÄṇa' with his own eyes. It is probable
that the BrahmÄṇá¸a-upapurÄṇa became extinct even before
the tenth century A.D.
H. P. Shastri's proposed identification of the BrahmÄṇá¸a-
upapurÄṇa with the Uttara-kh. of the BrahmÄṇá¸a-mahÄ-
purÄṇa, 59 does not seem to be convincing. In Skanda-p.
V. iii (RevÄ-kh.). 1. 44a and in the RevÄ-mÄhÄtmya" the
BrahmÄṇá¸a-mahÄpurÄṇa is said to have consisted of two
parts (bhÄga-dvaya-vibhūṣita).
7. The Bá¹›had-auÅ›anasa-upapurÄṇa.
This work is not mentioned in any of the lists of Upa-
purÄṇas, nor is it drawn upon or referred to by any com-
paratively early author. Even among the late Nibandha-
writers we have not found one who betrays his knowledge
