Essay name: Studies in the Upapuranas
Author: R. C. Hazra
This book studies the Upapuranas: a vast category of (often Sanskrit) literature representing significant historical, religious, and cultural insights of the ancient Indian civilization. These texts provide rich information, especially on Hinduism covering theology, mythology, rituals, and dynastic genealogies.

STUDIES IN THE UPAPURĀṆAS
mentioned as 'Auśanasa', 47 in most of them it is called
'UÅ›anaserita' (i.e. the PurÄṇa spoken out by UÅ›anas), 48
and in one it is named as 'Auśanasa-prokta'.49 In those
lists of eighteen UpapurÄṇas which Mitra-miÅ›ra and GopÄla-
dÄsa derived from the 'Brahma-vaivarta', this AuÅ›anasa-
upapurÄṇa is called 'Saukra'. 50
The mention of this UpapurÄṇa in almost all the lists of
eighteen UpapurÄṇas shows that it was a fairly early work
and must have been written before 800 A.D. But unfor-
tunately not a single Smá¹›ti or non-Smá¹›ti work is found to
draw upon or refer to it. It is probable that either this
AuÅ›anasa-upapurÄṇa became extinct at an early date, or it
became unpopular with the authors of Smá¹›ti and other
works from the tenth century A.D.
The AuÅ›anasa-upapurÄṇa must not be taken to be
the same as the Bá¹›had-auÅ›anasa-upapurÄṇa, which was a
much later work. For this Bá¹›had-auÅ›anasa-upapurÄṇa see
below.
4. The BÄrhaspatya UpapurÄṇa.
It is mentioned as the fourth UpapurÄṇa in the list of
UpapurÄṇas contained in the Revä-kh. (1. 49) of the Skanda-
p. No other list contains its name, nor does any commenta-
tor or Nibandha-writer draw upon or refer to it. So, we
are quite ignorant of its date and contents. According to
the Revä-kh., this BÄrhaspatya UpapurÄṇa belonged to the
VÄyu-p. (bÄrhaspatyam caturtham ca vÄyavyam sammatam
sadÄ. Skanda-p. V. iii. 1. 49a).

The BhÄgavata-upapurÄṇa.
The Devi-bhÄgavata mentions a 'BhÄgavata' in its list
47 See NityÄcÄra-pradipa, p. 19 (which derived its list from the 'Kurma-p.'),
Devi-bhÄgavata I. 3. 13-16.
48 For these lists See Vol. I, pp. 4-10 and 12.
See Vol. I, p. 10.
3º See ibid., p. 12.
Sukra and Uśanas are names of the same person.
