INTRODUCTION
Janardana (i.e., NÄrÄyaṇa) alone can give mÅksha and
He alone should be worshipped by those who wish for
it. This, however, is not so. For there are Sruti texts
like the following:-
Siva Ä“kÅ dhyÄyaá¸� Å›ivamkaraá¸� sarvamanyat parityajya ||
Isam gnÄtvÄ amrutatvamÄ“ti ||
GnÄtvÄ Sivam Å›ÄntimatyantamÄ“ti |\\\
IÅ›am gnÄtvÄ amrtiÄ bhavanti \\
Dhyana nirmathanÄbhyÄsÄt pÄÅ›am dahati panditaá¸�
Ksharam pradhÄnam amrutÄksharam havaá¸� ||
TasyÄbhidhyÄnÄt yojanÄt tatvabhÄvÄt bhÅ«yaÅ›chÄntÄ“
viÅ›vamÄyÄnivrittiá¸� |||
Eka Ä“va RudrÅ na dvitiyÄya tasthe
ViÅ›vÄdhikÅ RudrÅ maharshiá¸� ||
YÅ dÄ“vÄnÄm prathamam purastÄt |
Tamakratum paÅ›yati vÄ«taÅ›Åkaá¸� ||
DhÄtuá¸� prasÄdÄt mahimÄnamīśam || etc.
These and other like Sruti texts show that NÄrÄyaṇa
is not a god of the Brahmans (BrÄhmaṇa dÄ“vatÄ) and
Smritis which contradict Srutis cannot be accepted as
authoritative (declarations). Even such Smritis also
state that mÅksha is to be attained by the worship of Siva
through generations. For it is stated in the Skända
±Ê³Ü°ùÄåṇa:-
SänkhyayÅgasahasrēṇa janmanÄ DvaitagÅ bhavÄ“t
Tanmatasya sahasrēna Sauravam matamaśnutē!
TatsahasrasamabhyÄsÄt GÄṇapatyamatÅ bhavÄ“t
Tatsahasrēna bhūlokē Vaishṇavam matamīryatē |
Tadvaishnavasahasrēṇa ÅšÄkto bhavati sarvadÄ |
TatsahasrÄt mahÄbhÄga SaivasÄmÄnya uchyatÄ“
Tatsahasrēna viprendra VīraśaivamatŠbhavēt
TÄ“naiva muktimÄpnÅti nÄnyathÄ bahuyatnataá¸� || iti.
If one practises Sänkhya-yoga for a thousand genera-
tions, he becomes a Dvaita; if he practises a thousand
years more, he will then attain to the Saurava mata; 103
practising for a thousand generations, one of the GÄṇapatya
103 Saurava mata denotes the worship of the Sun.
