INTRODUCTION
Brahma-varchasvÄ«-bhÅ«yÄsam, i.e., that which causes one to
possess the brilliancy of Brahman. Here, the meaning
applicable to Äsam in the text AhamÄ“kaá¸� prathamamÄsam
iti, "I alone at first existed," should be given to Äsam in
bhÅ«yÄsam (bhÅ« +Äsam). If that is done, there is here
vidhyarthÅpa pattÄ“á¸�. That is, by means of the vidhi (the
prescribed ceremonial), the result follows. Therefore the
wearing of the linga (after the diksha) is testified to by the
achÄra that has prevailed from yore (ahamÄ“kaá¸� prathama-
mÄsam iti). Failure in securing such a consecration will
prevent the warding off of the eternal three-fold sins
(malatraya) of the three-fold physical body (sarira-traya).
The function of consecration is also a Vēdic one. In the
Vatula, it is stated:-Vaidikatvam yathuvakshyē sarvaveda
pramÄṇataá¸� VÄ“da vÄ“dÄnta siddhatvÄt vaidikam linga-
dhÄraṇam VÄ“da vÄ“dÄnta sÄstrÄ“shu purÄṇēshvagamëshu cha
BrÄhmaṇasya samÄkhyÄtam lingadhÄraṇam iti || I declare
that linga-dhÄraṇam is a consecration (of the body) rendered
necessary by the Vedas as the same is affirmed by all the Vēdas
and VÄ“dÄntas. In all the Vedas and VÄ“dÄntas, and PurÄṇas
and Ä€gamas, linga-dhÄraṇa is stated to be necessary for a
BrÄhmaṇa. In the Yajur-Véda generally and Taittiriya
Samhita in particular, the statement is affirmed:-" To those
who aim at mÅksha, linga-dhÄraṇa is spoken of as a necessary
consecration." The same is understood from Chchandas
and Vēda, where it is said that linga-dharaṇa came to be
born from Amrita (ambrosia). In the Linga Purana, it
is said :-
Indrastu ParamaiÅ›varyaÅ›ÄlÄ« Samba strilochanaá¸�, mÄm
mÄ“dhayÄ pragnyaya cha spruṇotu priṇayatvatha, amrutasya
mukshalÄbhÄya sarvadÄ“hëshu sarvadÄ, dÄ“vasya lingarupasya
Sivasya paramÄtmanaá¸�, dhÄraṇam tad dhritiryasya dÄ“vadhÄ-
rana ishyate, tasmÄt sarÄ«rammÄ“lÅke vicharshana makilbisham,
jihvÄ mÄ“ rasanÄ bhÅ«yÄt madhurÄlÄpabhÄshiṇÄ�, karṇÄbhyÄm
SrÅtrayugmina bhÅ«rivyaÅ›ruvamasmyaham || Brahmaṇaá¸�
pÄrvatīśasya kÅsÅdhishá¹­hÄnamevahi, asÄ“riva yadÄ lÅkÄ“ prag-
nayÄ mëdhayÄ vritah, Å›rutam tatÅ›ravaṇÄdÄ«ni mÄ“ gÅpÄya
prayatnataá¸�, ityÄdinÄ||
