This is an English study of the Sankalpa Suryodaya鈥攁n allegorical Sanskrit drama by Venkatanatha, a distinguished philosopher-poet and dramatist of the Vishishtadvaita Vedanta tradition. This work of Venkata-natha (or, Vedanta Deshika). stands out for integrating allegory to convey moral and philosophical truths. The thesis examines its place in Sanskrit literature.

The Commentaries of Vedanta De艣ika form an important contributions to
Visi峁advaitic literature. These works are faithful to the texts and yet critical
to the core.
VI. COMMENTARIES
1. Tattva-峁璱k膩: It is an exposition of the 艢ribhasya of R膩m膩nuja, and it
presents the outlines of the Vi艣i峁advaitic metaphysics in all its details. It is the
outcome of the twenty eight terms or sessions of the teachings on the 艢r墨bh膩峁a
undertaken by Ved膩nta De艣ika for the cause of the propagation and the
preservation of the R膩m膩nuja Philosophy. It bares testimony on the vast
scholarship and the versatile genius of the author. This commentary is decidedly
the best of all commentaries on the 艢r墨bh颧峁a.
2. T膩tparya-candrik膩: It is a super commentary on the G墨ta-bhasya of
R膩m膩nuja. He has presented the view point of R膩m膩nuja on the highest
philosophy of human life i.e. Prapatti. It is as much constructive as critical. The

aha峁� tv膩 sarvap膩pebhyo mok峁yi峁膩mi m膩 艣uca岣� || (] XVIII. 66 ) is analysed
to contain the quintessence of the Gita which means deep, selfless love and
devotion to God.
3. Gitartha-sangraha-rak峁Ｄ� : It is a commentary on the 'Gitartha-
sangraha' of Y膩mun膩c膩rya. It has eighteen chapters of the Gita. It has made the
G墨ta, Prapatti-s盲stra for the 艢r墨vai峁ａ箛avas. Ved膩nta Desika has attempted a
convincing synthesis of action and knowledge with love plus devotion. It is the
momenclature for the eighteen chapters of the Gita. For example, the first chapter
is named as 艢rava峁嚹乨hikarin, the second as 艢rava峁嚹乨hikari-moha艣amanam, etc.
5. Git膩rtha-sangraha-pattu: It is a Tamil treatise on the philosophy of the
Gita as explained by Y膩mun膩c膩rya in his Git膩rtha-sangraha.
6. Catu艣艣loki-bh膩峁a : It is a commentary on the 'Catu艣艣loki' of
Y膩mun膩c膩rya. Here Ved膩nta Desika presents his views on the significance of '艢ri'
