Craftsmanship: Puppet making process of Assam
Puppets reveal a very high level of artisanship. The puppet makers should be expert in tailoring, painting and all above he should be a good sculptor with great imaginative capacity. As puppetry is very ancient art form, easily available and cheapest forms of materials are preferred while making puppets. It is common characteristics of all traditional puppet groups. In Assam, there are three kinds of practitioners of puppet. They are devided as-Puppet groups stick to traditional form of puppet,puppet groups who are knowing or unknowingly following both modern and traditional form and lastly those puppet troupes,who are totally avoiding traditional form of puppets and devoted to modern form of puppets.
Puppetry practiced in different parts of the state have their own identity. Regional styles of painting and sculputers are reflected in them. In Assam, different puppet troupes follow different technique while making puppet.
The traditional way of making puppet is to joining different parts of the puppet body i.e. heads, torso and limbs with cloths and thread.
For the help of study, puppet making process can divided into the following three categories�
The traditional puppet troupes of Assam, follows different process of making puppet. Easily available and low cost materials are generally used in making of puppet. In Assam, traditional troupes used three kinds of string puppets.They are-
a. Kuhila putala:
Kuhila or pith is mainly used to make traditional puppet. The making process of puppet with Kuhila is very interesting. Kuhila grows in wetland area. Beside Kuhila, other materials used in making puppet are-gum,white clay,oil paint,sand paper.Kuhila is used to make figure of puppets. The hands and face of puppet are made with light wood of trees like modar (cordial myxa) or sal(shorea robusta)etc. The facial feature carves out on soft woods or coconut shells.After cutting in proper size, they are lightly coated with white laxative clay or mixture of wood pulp and fevicol and dyed in different colours. Roots of dry water hayacinth is used as hair of puppet.The whole process of making kuhila puppet takes ten to fifteen days.
b. Bahor patidoi putala (bamboo strip puppet):
Bahor patidoi putala or bamboo strip puppets are very light.
The materials required to make bahor patidoi puppets are-bamboo strips, laxative clay and cow dung,cloth and colour, paper pulp, flour of wheat and powder of fenugreek.
At first, base of puppets are made with bamboo strips.The base is coated with the mixture of cow dung, rotten paper, flour of wheat, laxative clay and fenugreek powder. The purpose of using fenugreek powder is to protect the puppets from attack of insects. After coating,puppets are kept in a place with proper sunlight and when the base become dry, eyes, nose, ears and lips are painted on it. However, one of the limitations of this type of puppet is that, they are not very long lasting.They get brakes very easily.
c. Kathat kata putala or Wooden Puppet:
Kathat kata means puppet made of woods or wooden puppet.Light woods of trees like modar (cordial myxa) or sal (shorea robusta)etc. are used for making wooden puppet. Light woods are used to make the puppet less labour consuming.Generally there are no provision of joints in wooden puppets.With the help of sharp tools like knife, different body parts of puppets are carved on wood. Puppets are dyed in different colours according to the character depict by the puppets.
