This page relates ‘Types of Samanya of the study on the Nyaya-Vaisheshika categories with special reference to the Tarkasangraha by Annambhatta. Both Nyaya and Vaisesika are schools of ancient Indian Philosophy, and accepted in their system various padarthas or objects of valid knowledge. This study investigates how the Tarkasamgraha reflects these categories in the combined Nyayavaisesika school.

Types of 峾Բⲹ
[Full title: The concept of 峾Բⲹ (3): Types of 峾Բⲹ]
Praśastapāda divides 峾Բⲹ into two types, viz.,
This division is accepted by the later exponents of the school. Udayana states that para covers a wider area, while apara covers a narrower area.
Following Praśastapāda, վśٳ[2], Śivāditya[3], ś Ѿś[4], ԲԲṃbṭṭ35and others divide 峾Բⲹ into two kinds,
- superior and
- inferior.
The example of para峾Բⲹ is ٳ or being. It is superior because it covers a wider area than all other universals. It subsists in all the three 貹ٳ, viz., dravya, ṇa and karma. It is a generality only.[5] Dravyatva, gunatva, karmatva etc. which subsist in dravya, ṇa and karma respectively are apara峾Բⲹs. “They are lower generalities. They are generalities (峾Բⲹ), because they assimilate their proper individuals to one another. They are lower generalities (śṣa), because they discriminate their proper individuals from other kinds of individuals. They are the causes of assimilation and discrimination both.[6]
In this way though the ղśṣi첹 pronounce 峾Բⲹ as of two types, actually however, these are three types of 峾Բⲹ. This is clarified by վśٳ, Śivāditya and others. վśٳ at first mentions two universals, higher and lower. But at next step he mentions that there are some 峾Բⲹs which are both higher and lower (貹貹)[7]
Śivāditya, again, maintains that there are three types of 峾Բⲹ viz.,
- para,
- apara and
- 貹貹.
ٳ is the highest 峾Բⲹ. Dravyatva etc. are 貹貹 峾Բⲹ. Dravyatva is inferior in comparison to ٳ, but is higher in comparison to ṛtīٱ (the genus of earth). So it is 貹貹. Similarly all universals which are extensive in comparison to some universals and pervaded by some other universals are 貹貹 峾Բⲹs. ҳṭaٱ etc. are apara 峾Բⲹ, since there are inferior to dravyatva, ṛtīٱ etc. but are not superior to any 峾Բⲹ.[8]
ԲԲṃbṭṭ has accepted only two kinds of 峾Բⲹ
- para and
- apara.
In his view ٳ is superior. All other 峾Բⲹs like dravyatva etc. are inferior.[9] He has not mentioned about 貹貹 variety of 峾Բⲹ.
