Part 4 - Ჹś󲹰’s Race and Caste

Ჹś󲹰 calls himself as 屹īⲹ[1] in the 屹ⲹīṃs. Because he was born in family and he was the better known as to his successor.

“The name rājaśekhara ( Ի śekhara yasya) means ś (Իś󲹰 being given by Amara as a synonym of ś)[2].

In the introductory verses of վ첹ñᲹī, ٳ󲹲Բ refers to his as an Kavi.

samādhiguṇaśālinya prasannaparipakrimā |
yāyāvarakavervāco munīnāmiva vṛttaya
||
   - Tilakamañjarī of ٳ󲹲Բ: 33

And ṭṭ [ḍḍ󲹱], the author of 岹ⲹܲԻ岹ī notice him as a simply and praises him for his dramatic skill.

yāyāvara prañjāvaro guṇañjairāśaṃsita sūrisamājavayai
nṛtyatyudāra bhaṇiterguṇasthā naṭīva yasyoṭharasā padaśrī
||
   - 岹ⲹܲԻ岹ī of ṭṭ [ḍḍ󲹱]: VIII

Ჹś󲹰 was very proud for him and his family literary forefathers.

However he belonged to the family but it is not clear that he was a 󳾲ṇa or ṣaٰⲹ. According to ⲹṇa Dikṣita 屹 means a kind of ṛhٳ[3]. C.f.

dvividho goṣṭho yāyāvarīya śālīna ca
   - ñ첹ṛt (Mitakṣarā comm.): I/ 12

Means there are two kinds of ṛa󲹲ٳ: The and the ŚīԲ, but probably is the name of the 󳾲ṇa family. Apte remarks[4], Ჹś󲹰 must also be presumed to have been a 󳾲ṇa, because he was not becoming guru or ܱⲹ of ѲԻ and Ѳ󾱱[5] and also he is said to be an incarnation of 󲹱ūپ.

On the other hand, Ჹś󲹰’s wife ԳīܲԻ岹ī was the Cauhāna ṣaٰⲹ family, so he may be ṣaⲹ. But when Ჹś󲹰 was belong, those times anuloma marriage was accepted in society. In the ѲԳܲṃh says:

śūdraiva bhāryā śūdrasya sā ca svā ca viśa smṛta |
te ca svā caiva rāñja syustāśca svā cāgrajanmana
||
   - ѲԳܲṃh: III/ 13

And the ñ첹ṛt also says about the anuloma marriage as:

tisro varṇānupūrveṇa dve tathaikā yathākramam |
vrāhmaṇakṣatriyaviśā bhāryā svā śūdrajanmana
||
   - ñ첹ṛt: I/3/ 53

So it seems that Ჹś󲹰’s was born in a 󳾲ṇa family.
