Historical Elements in the Matsya Purana

This page relates ‘Lineages of Daksha� of the study on the historical elements of the Matsya-purana: one of the eighteen Mahapuranas which are Sanskrit texts that have preserved the cultural heritage, philosophy, religion, geography, etc of ancient India. This Matsyapurana was originally written in 20,000 verses and deals with topics such as architecture, ancient history, polity, religion and philosophy.

Lineages of ٲṣa
There were eighty million children of ٲṣa ʰ貹پ who are widely spread in the world at this time.[1] When the creation of gods, sages and serpents did not expand, then ٲṣa produced a thousand sons from Pāncajanī’s womb, who became famous by the name ‘Haryasca�. But they all died.[2] then ٲṣa again produced one thousand sons from Vīrinī’s womb, who became famous as ‘Śabal�. But again they all died.[3] Subsequently, when those sons were also destroyed, Pracetanandana ʰ貹پ ٲṣa produced sixty girls from Vīrinī’s womb. Out of them; ٲṣagave ten to Dharma, thirteen to Kaṣyapa, twenty-seven to 䲹Ի, four to ṣṭԱ, two to Bhṛgunandan Śܰ, two to ṛśāśv and two daughters to Angirā. Ѳܳٱī, Vasu, 峾ī, , Գ, ܲԻī, Sankalpā, ѳܳū, and վś are the ten wives of Dharma. The names of his sons are as well–from վś ten Viśavadevas, from twelve Sādhyos, from Ѳܳٱī forty-nine Marutas, from Vasu eight Vasus, from Գ twelve Suryas, from ѳܳū ѳܳūٲ첹, from ҳṣa, from 峾ī Nagavīthī and from Sankalpā Sankalpa. All the animals and creatures originated from ܲԻī’s womb.[4]
Ā貹, Dhruva, Soma, Dhara, Anila, Anala, ʰٲṣa and ʰ–these are the eight Vasus. Among them there were four sons of Āpa named ŚԳٲ, ٲṇḍ, Ś峾 and Ѳṇiٰ. The last Vasu, Dhruva’s son was . Varcākī originated from Soma. Two sons named ٰṇa and Ჹⲹ are originated from the womb of ṇiī in connection of Dhara. Daughter of Hari, ѲԴdz gave birth to three sons named ʰṇa, 鲹ṇa and Śś in connection of Dhara. Ś received two sons, Manojava and Avigjatagati who were often of similar qualities as Agni, from the connection of Anala. Kumar (Kārthikeya) was the son of Agni. His brothers were Ś, վś and Naigameya. They all are also known as Kartikeya due to being a child of ṛtپ. ʰٲṣa had two sons named Vibhu and Deval (Ѳṣi Deval, son of Asita and 첹貹ṇ�, who is the author of ‘Devalasmṛti�, is different from them) who later became great sages. ʰ had a son, վś첹, who was skilled in craftsmanship. He became famous as a carpenter of deities in the construction work of the ʰ岹 (ٳ), building, garden, statue, jewelery, lake and well etc.[5]
