chapter II Major goddesses 81 regained his senses back, the washer-man repents his act. As if by
destiny/Paraśurāma meets this washerman and he promises to revive
the washer-man's wife along with Renukā. Both are happy and in
excessive happiness, the heads are interchanged such that when it was
revived it was as follows - the head is of Renuka and the trunk is of
the washer-man's wife and vise versa. The result is that Renuka with
the washerwoman's body is unacceptable as a wife by Jamadagni as
she is an 'untouchable' now. The washerwoman with Renuka's head
too is 'untouchable' as she is considered as divine by the washer man.
This is seen crystallized in the worship of Renukā or Märiämma. In
temples, the goddess Renukā is worshipped in two forms.
(i)
Regular idol form with snake hoods atop her crown is
depicted and to which worship is offered.
(ii) Only the head with a crown of flame.
The head of Renukā is placed on the ground, below the seat of the
idol. This can be interpreted as follows-
Renuka as the form of earth is depicted with a crown of flame.
This is to be understood as the iconographic representation of
the earth in the form of the anthill. The flame of fire as crown
on the earth can be identified with another form of valmika, the
volcano, which in eastern countries, represents the earth as the
terrifying mother. Renukā thus represents both the aspect of the
earth as the terrifying earth and the benevolent earth.
