chapter 1. Introduction Tränam ca kurute yasmāt tantram-iti-abhidheyase³. 9 This definition has two roots
1) tanto increase and 2) trai = to protect, to save.
* The Mahābhāṣya (1.4.54.) defines tantra as
Ayam tantra-śabdho-ast-ieva vitane vartate
Tad-yathāsternāma tantram proktam tantram-iti.
Here tantra is used in the sense of holding and stretching.
* In the Caraka-Samhitā, tantra as a scientific work has the following
equivalents':
ñ
Tatra-ayurvedah śākha vidyā sūtram gnyanam sastram lakṣaṇam
tantram-ityan-arthantaram.
* The Kavya-Mīmāmsa of Rājaśekara states that, tantra is one of the
four sastras-
Pauruṣeyam tu purāṇam anvekṣikī mīmāmsā, smrti-tantram-iti catvāri
śٰṇi.
* Gautama in his Nyāya-darśana says,
Tanträdhikaraṇa-abhi-upāgama-sansthiti siddhanta.
