chapter 1. Introduction 12 Tantra is a special branch of the Sakti cult in Hinduism with its
various manifestations of aesthetic and spiritual consciousness. It is a
cult of ecstasy focused on a vision of cosmic sexuality. The texts
include lifestyles, rituals, mysteries, myths and philosophy, mantras
and peculiar signs 'n' symbols called yantras of the cult, which
together is known as tantra. Tantra borrowed the images from the
Veda and Upanisads often giving them suitable shapes in, their visual
terms by means of symbolic diagrams. Tantra thus deals with all
matters of common belief and practices and interests every one. In its
present and widely accepted sense, tantra means a body of literature
which spreads knowledge, particularly of profound things with the
help of mystical diagrams i.e. Yantras and words possessing esoteric
meanings i.e. Mantras, which are the means²².
Tantra is said to be the secret doctrine of Sambhu and which
can only be gathered verbally from those who hold the key to it. The
knowers are silent and do not reveal it but hold and guard it like a
protected house wife23. The tantra is a ritual the peculiarity of which
is the worship of the female energy of Siva which is personified in the
person of his Śaktī. This special energy is concerned with sexual
intercourse and magical powers24.
