Date of the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»å

Hume has fixed the age of the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»å by 600 B.C. just before the rise of Buddhism.[1] Keith also possesses the same view as he has also placed the earlier ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»ås before the appearance of Buddha, i.e., before 500 B.C.[2] From the deliberation of Swami Vivekananda on 26th May, 1950, it can be ascertained that the origin of ancient sanskrit literature may be traced approximately 5000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ and the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»åic literature probably came into existence 2000 years before the origin of ancient sanskrit literature.[3] S.N. Dasgupta is of the opinion that the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»ås were compiled by 500 B.C.[4] S. Radha Krishnan has pointed out that these were composed between the Vedic and Buddhistic period, i.e., by 600 B.C.[5] The upper and lower limits of the composition of the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»ås has been fixed by Ranade as 1200 B.C. and 600 B.C.[6] R.C. Dwivedi, however suggests that the earliest ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»ås were composed around 700 to 600 B.C.[7] But the majority of the scholars have accepted the upper limit and the lower limit of the composition of the ±«±è²¹²Ô¾±á¹£a»ås in between 1000 B.C. to 300 B.C.[8]
