For an appreciation of the possibilities of any society, at least in so far as social change is concerned, knowledge of the position of women is necessary. One of the best ways to understand the spirit of a civilisation and to appreciate its excellences and realise its limitations is to study the history of the position and the status of women in it.94 Her status, position and honour have been vitally affected as she passed through the different stages of life in the capacity of a daughter, a wife, a mother and the other conditions as affected by the circumstances.
