Hostile Accounts and Controversies
We can see there are also a few unfavourable references to the personality of Åšri Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ù²¹. They are found in the very late Dvaita works, ²ÑÄå»å³ó²¹±¹²¹±¹¾±Âá²¹²â²¹ and ²Ñ²¹²Ô¾±³¾²¹Ã±Âá²¹°ù¾± of ±·Äå°ùÄå²â²¹á¹‡a Ä€³¦Äå°ù²â²¹ and in the History of Buddhism in India by Taranatha, a Buddhist chronicler of the medieval Tibet. Perhaps on the basis of Anantagiri’s account of Åšri Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ù²¹â€™s miraculous birth, the author raises doubts about the Ä€³¦Äå°ù²â²¹â€™s legitimacy. The Tibetian chronicler writes how one Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ùÄ峦Äå°ù²â²¹, defeated in a debate by the Buddhist philosopher DharmakÄ«rti, commited suicide by leaping into the deep waters of the ³Ò²¹á¹…g²¹.
About Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ùÄ峦Äå°ù²â²¹ one thing is struck by the fact that almost of all the biographies come from South India. This shows that the South has been more devoted to religion and philosophy preached by Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ùÄ峦Äå°ù²â²¹. Ä€³¦Äå°ù²â²¹ himself came from the South. It may also be observed that all these Åš²¹á¹…k²¹°ù²¹ biographies, including those that claim to be quite old, may have to be assigned to the age of the Vijayanagara Empire and to subsequent ages. Moreover from Indian history we learned that during te age of Vijayanagara empire, the Hindu revivalism was more conspicous in the South than in the North.
