The essay studies the ancillary literature of the Atharva-Veda with special reference to the Parisistas. It does so by understanding the socio-cultural and philosophical aspects of ancient Indian life. The Atharvaveda addresses encompasses all practical aspects of life from health and prosperity to rituals and sorcery.

east, it indicates good rains, good crop and prosperity to
the king; if in the north-east, it indicates abundance of
corn; and if in the north, it indicates acquisition of (new)
land. If it is observed in the north-west, there is the fear
of theft and trouble to the horses. The whirl-wind in the
west angurs danger to the king and trouble to acquatic
creatures; and the one in the south-west predicts great danger
to crops, cows, women and tribes (ganas). The whirl-wind seen
in the south prognosticates trouble to the king and affects
his life-period; and the one in the south-east forebodes
danger to the country Anartta.
66 The sound of the whirl-wind is said to be audible up
to one yojana. There is danger to those places where it is
heard. The Raudri or the Abhaya santi should be performed to
alleviate that danger (60.1.1-6).
2 (e). Twilight-clouds
It is a matter of common experience that clouds appear
with different colours at the time of twilight. They appear
in different forms also. Their colours, forms, thunders and
movements are believed to foretell the future. 67

the whirl-wind revolves.
