This page relates ‘Examples of Pragalbha Khandita� of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines� representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Examples of the ʰ variety of the ṇḍ character of woman heroine:

समाक्रान्त� वक्षश्चरणकमलालक्तकरस� र्विपक्षप्रेयस्याः क्षुभितहृदया वीक्ष्� सुचिरम� �
गिरा तन्व्य� तन्वी पतिमसहमानात्ममुकुर� मुखं दर्श� दर्श� त्रपयत� सखी सुन्दरमुखी �

samākrānta� vakṣaścaraṇakamalālaktakarasai rvipakṣapreyasyā� kṣubhitahṛdayā vīkṣya suciram |
girā tanvyā tanvī patimasahamānātmamukure mukha� darśa� darśa� trapayati sakhī sundaramukhī ||

The hero comes with marks of red Lac on his chest. The agitated seeing for a long time shows the mirror to him again and again to make him feel ashamed.

मामुद्वीक्ष्� विपक्षपक्ष्मलदृश� पादाम्बुजालक्तकै-रालिप्ताननमानतीकृतमुखी चित्रार्पितेवाभवत् �
रू क्षं नोक्तवती � वा कृतवती निश्वासकोष्ण� दृशौ प्रातर्मङ्गलमङ्गनाकरतलादादर्शमादर्शयत् �

māmudvīkṣya vipakṣapakṣmaladṛśa� pādāmbujālaktakai-rāliptānanamānatīkṛtamukhī citrārpitevābhavat |
rū kṣa� noktavatī na vā kṛtavatī niśvāsakoṣṇe dṛśau prātarmaṅgalamaṅganākaratalādādarśamādarśayat ||[2]

The guilty ⲹ첹 tells his friend: Seeing my face red with the marks of the feet of the other woman, in the morning; she bent her head and stood like a picture. She neither spoke with anger nor did her eyes turn red, nor did she heave a sigh, she showed me the mirror in her hand instead.

संबाहणसुहरसतोसिए� देते� तु� कर� लक्खम् �
चरणे� विक्कमाइव्वचरिअमणुवट्टिअ� तिस्सा �
(संवाहनरसतोषिते� ददता तव कर� लाक्षा� �
चरणे� विक्रमादित्यचरितमनुवर्तितं तस्याः �)

saṃbāhaṇasuharasatosieṇa deteṇa tuha kare lakkham |
caraṇena vikkamāivvacariamaṇuvaṭṭia� tissā ||

(saṃvāhanarasatoṣitena dadatā tava kare lākṣāṃ |
caraṇena vikramādityacaritamanuvartita� tasyā� ||
)[3]

The lac from her feet on your hands, tell the story of Vikramaditya and the pleasure of riding.
