This page relates ‘Examples of Madhya Virahotkanthita� of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines� representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Part 7 - Examples of Ѳ վdzٰ첹ṇṭ
Examples of the Ѳ variety of the վdzٰ첹ṇṭ character of woman heroine:
आनेतुं � गत� किमु प्रियसखी भीतो भुजङ्गात� किमु क्रुद्धो वा प्रतिषेधवाचि किमस� प्राणेश्वर� वर्तते �
इत्थ� कर्णसुवर्णकेतकरज� पातोपघातच्छलादक्ष्णो� कापिनवोढनीरजमुखी वाष्पोदक� मुञ्चत� ॥{ग्ल्_नोते:३९०७५०:}ānetu� na gatā kimu priyasakhī bhīto bhujaṅgāt kimu kruddho vā pratiṣedhavāci kimasau prāṇeśvaro vartate |
ittha� karṇasuvarṇaketakaraja� pātopaghātacchalādakṣṇo� kāpinavoḍhanīrajamukhī vāṣpodaka� muñcati ||[1]“Oh! Did not my friend go to call him! Or was he scared away by the snakes (on his path) or was he offended by my refusal to his advances?� thus contemplating the ⾱ with a face like a fully blown lotus shed tears on the pretext of the pollen, from the ketaki flower worn on her ears, having fallen into her eyes.
तदेतत् कि� कुञ्जं � मिलदलिपुञ्जं भवति वा � वा नीतो भीतः किमि� मम सख्य� सभुजगै� �
इतीयं वाष्पोदै� श्रुतिकलितकह्लाररज� -च्छलादन्तस्तप्ता वनमि� गत� सिञ्चत� वधूः �tadetat ki� kuñja� na miladalipuñja� bhavati vā na vā nīto bhīta� kimiha mama sakhyā sabhujagai� |
itīya� vāṣpodai� śrutikalitakahlārarajasa -cchalādantastaptā vanamiva gatā siñcati vadhū� ||[2]Can there be a bower not swarmed by honey bees? Are my good cultured friends not scared away by the snakes? Just like how the worm makes sound in the forest, like that the lady, like a water Lilly living in the dark made sound while shedding tears and went away.
