This essay studies the Arts in the Puranas by reconstructing the theory of six major fine arts—Music, Dance, Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, and Literature—from the Major and Minor Puranas. This thesis shows how ancient sages studied these arts within the context of cultural traditions of ancient India.

- 146- UNITS OF MEASUREMENT The Vayu Purana and the Brahmanda Purana which give instructions about town planning also describe the various units of measurements of distance and their relation to one another. The measurements are Angula, Pradesa, Tala, Gokarna, Vitasti, Ratni, Hasta, Aisku, Dhamis, Danda, Nalikayuga, Gavyuti and Yojana. Their relation to one another is as followss 8 Angulas Prādesa. 12 Angulas Vitasti 21 Angulas Ratni 2 Ratnis or 42 Angulas Kisku 24 Angulas Hasta 4 Hastas Dhanus 2000 Dhanus Gavyūti 46 8000 Dhanus
Yojana.
The Brahmanda Purana has described similar measurements
but it gives 10 Angulas for one Prädesa and 3 Hastas for one
Dhamus.
47 Both the Puranas are not clear about the measurements
namely Danda and Nalika-yuga.
