This page relates ‘Economics (5): Means of Transportation of the study on the Amarakoshodghatana of Kshirasvamin (in English) which represents a commentary on the Amarakosha of Amarasimha. These ancient texts belong the Kosha or “lexicography category of Sanskrit literature which deals with the analysis and meaning of technical words from a variety of subjects, such as cosmology, anatomy, medicine, hygiene. The Amarakosa itself is one of the earliest of such text, dating from the 6th century A.D., while the Amarakoshodghatana is the earliest known commentary on that work.

ś mentions various vehicles in the ṣaٰⲹ varga (II. 8. 52-60):

(a) Śṅg

[War charriot:]

syandana and ratha are its other synonyms mentioned by ś ṣīr峾 mentions that it is also called 峾貹⾱첹

ٲⲹԱԲ Բ sāṃparāyikākhyam |

(b) ʳṣpٳ

ś mentions it to be any chariot other than the war-chariot. ṣīr峾 reads the word as ʳṣyٳ and explains that it is the chariot used in auspicious occasions and festivities

ṣy yātrotsavādau maṅgalyo ٳ puṣyaٳ |

(c) ṇīrٳ

[Covered car:]

ś mentions ṇa and ḍaⲹԲ as synonyms.

ṣīr峾 explains 첹ṇīrٳ as a long carriage, palanquin carried on the shoulders of men

karṇiṣu skandheṣu ٳ karṇīstha dīrgho lakṣyāt puṃskaṃdhohyamāno ٳ |

ṣīr峾 also adds that ḍaⲹԲ was the vehicle, flying in air like birds, also called Բ

ḍayante vihāyasā yāntīva ānena vimānākhyam |

This reference to the flying vehicle by ṣīr峾 confirms the fact that he was well acquainted with such details like his contemporary Bhoja.

۲ⲹԲ (II. 8. 54; p. 186)

ś mentions ś as its synonym.

ṣīr峾 explains it as a vehicle of handicapped and also that Ҳḍa calls it a Yuga

ⲹśٲⲹ Բ yugākhyā yānamiti ḍa |

Other vehicles mentioned in ś are ś첹ṭa–load carriages, Գٰī–lٳٱ, DZ–swing like transportation, dvaipa–carriage covered with tiger skin, ṇḍܰ첹ī–car covered with white woollen cloth and ٳ–a multitude of cars. Mention of bullocks and camels in this varga suggests that they were also used for transportation.

In the Vārivarga ś lists the synonyms of water vehicles such asԲboat and ḵ貹–raft or float. Their various parts are also enumerated as follows:

(d) Āٲ (I. 9. 11; p. 63)

[Freight or fare:]

ś gives ٲ and ղ貹ṇy to denote fare or freight.

ṣīr峾 observes that some call ٲ as 屹貹

ٲntyanena ٲ 屹貹 ityeke |

(e) ū貹첹 (I. 9. 12; p. 63):

A mast or crew is denoted by the words ū貹첹 or ṇaṛkṣa첹.

ṣīr峾 says that ṇaṛkṣa is the mast or a post to which a ship or boat is fastened with a rope. He also gives the opinion of a few that it is the crew

ṇaṛkṣo yatra nau rajjvā badhyate pote dhvajapaṭādyādhāra ityeke | kūpe ādhāragarte kāyati ū貹첹 |

ṣīr峾 gives the view of Ҳḍa who opines that ū貹첹 is a tree in the rivergauḍastu jalāntastarūṃkūpakānāha ||

(f) ܰ岹ṇḍ (I. 9. 13; p. 63)

[Oar:]

The Բܰ岹ṇḍ is also called ṣe貹ṇ. ṣīr峾 notes that ṣe貹ṇ is the 貹ṃśa of ṣo貹ṇ and that according to it is ṣi貹.

kṣipyatyanayā ṣe貹ṇ, kṣopaṇyapabhraṃśa | kṣipetyupādhyāya || kvacit pānapātra tu poto'bdhibhave triṣu samudriya sāmudriko manuṣyobdhidau Բ samudrikā || ( samudrikā ca Բ)

Some of the other parts mentioned in ś are 첹ṇa–cٲ, Ծ峾–c, aritram–m, –scraper or shovel and 첹ٰ–bܳ.

From the above study it is evident that air vehicles were developed in the time of ṣīr峾, which probably were not used during the time of ś That water transport was also put to good use can be inferred from the terms like ٲ and others.
