Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁�ya):

鈥�Which鈥欌赌攄enotes question.

If the 鈥榮eed鈥� forms the more important factor, the children born from mothers of lower castes gradually attain the higher caste of the father; and the same principle might be applied to the case of the 鈥榮oil鈥� being regarded as the more important factor. So that, just as the child born to the 叠谤腻丑尘补峁嘺 father from a 鈥楴on-Aryan,鈥欌赌�i.e., 艢奴dra鈥攎辞迟丑别谤鈥斺赌�some-how鈥欌赌�i.e., even when the woman is not his married wife,鈥攚ould attain the higher caste鈥攕o also 鈥�the child born to a non-Aryan from the 叠谤腻丑尘补峁嘺 woman鈥� would attain the higher caste, on the ground of the 鈥榮oil鈥� being the more important factor;鈥攊t having been declared (under 9.34) that 鈥榩redominance attaches sometimes to the seed and sometimes to the soil鈥欌赌� (66)
