For the cleansing of the ejectors or urine and faeces, earth and water should be used, as much as may be necessary; as also in the twelve cleansings of the bodily excretions.鈥�(132).

 

Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (manubh膩峁�ya):

The impurity of the bodily excretions having been asserted in 131, the present verse proceeds to lay down directions for their cleansing.

鈥�Ejectors of urine and faeces鈥欌赌�i.e., the. organs by which these are passed,鈥�i. e. the Anus &c.;鈥攆or the cleansing of these鈥攐ne should 鈥�use earth and water, as much as may be necessary鈥�; i. e. not minding any restrictions as to the number (of washings and rubbings), one should go on taking up as much water and earth as may be necessary for the total removal of smells and stains.

鈥�Bodily鈥欌赌攑roceeding from the body,鈥斺��excretions鈥欌赌攚hich are sources of impurity. In connection with the purifications necessitated by these also, earth and water are to be used as much as may be necessary. In another 厂尘峁泃颈 we read鈥斺�業n the case of the former six excretions both earth and water should be used; in the case of the latter six one is purified even by the use of water only鈥�.

In connection with phlegm &c. it is thus declared in another 厂尘峁泃颈鈥斺�楾he viscid excretion from the nose is called Phlegm鈥�; and since this occurs among the latter group of six, for cleansing it earth need not be used at all.鈥�(132).

This verse is quoted in 础辫补谤腻谤办补 (p. 271), which explains 鈥�arthavat鈥� as 鈥榓s much as may be needed for removing the smell and stains,鈥� and adds that in the case of the latter six of the twelve 鈥榠mpurities鈥� (enumerated in the next verse) the use of clay is optional;鈥攊n 惭补诲补苍补辫腻谤颈箩腻迟补 (p. 51), which adds that after the passing of urine and feces, washing with water is 鈥�arthavat,鈥� 鈥榰seful鈥�;鈥攊n 痴墨谤补尘颈迟谤辞诲补测补 (膧hnika, p. 45), which explains 鈥�arthavat鈥� as 鈥榝ulfilling the purposes of removing the smell and stains鈥�;鈥攁nd again on p. 104, to say that Manu should be understood to mean that out of the case of the twelve 鈥榠mpurities,鈥� in some both water and clay should be used, while in some either of the two only;鈥攁nd in 贬别尘腻诲谤颈 (艢r膩ddha, p. 794).

Gautama (1.42, 43).鈥斺�楶urification from defilement by unclean substances is effected when the stains and the smell have been removed;鈥攁nd this shall be done first by water and then by earth.鈥�

叠补耻诲丑腻测补苍补 (1.10.11-15).鈥斺�楢fter urinating, he shall cleanse it with earth and water; in like manner on evacuating bowels;鈥攁fter an emission of semen, in the same manner as after urinating.鈥�

痴颈峁ａ箛耻 (60.24).鈥斺�楬aving cleaned his hind parts with a clod of earth, or with brick...... he must rise and clean himself with water and earth鈥攕o as to remove the smell and the filth.鈥�

驰腻箩帽补惫补濒办测补 (1.17).鈥斺�楾he man shall perform purification with earth and water fetched for the purpose鈥攖ill the stain and the smell disappear.鈥�
